In the performance Teenage Songbook of Love and Sex by Alexander Roberts and Ásrún Magnúsdóttir, young people from Iceland and Estonia take the stage to perform songs they’ve written themselves about love, gender, sexuality, heartbreak, and growing up. Before the show on August 28, the makers and performers of the performance will join Kristina Birk-Vellemaa for a conversation to discuss the background of the production and what the creative process was like for the participants.
“Sex and sexuality are natural parts of life. The way we think about them, and the feelings those thoughts evoke in us, are largely influenced by the culture around and within us — which is often very limiting.” – Kristina Birk-Vellemaa
Kristina Birk-Vellemaa (also known as @sekspositiiv) is an anthropologist, sexologist, and sexual health counselor who lives in Pärnu. If she had to sum it all up, she would call herself a sexual empowerment advocate, because through her work, she empowers people — making society as a whole more joyful, sex-positive, and free. Kristina sees sex-positivity as a diverse set of attitudes and values that go far beyond just sex. Sex positivity also includes the freedom of self-expression, the right to choose and prefer different sexual practices, the right to be sexually active throughout one’s life (or not), the right to freely give consent in sexual activities — and much more.
