Snowy Tropics

The conceptual starting point of the installation "Snowy Tropics" is Karl Ristikivi's "Night of Souls", a novel written in 1953. Visitors enter a room where they are greeted by a tropical photographic wall that creates the illusion of a warm and relaxing environment. But this idyllic atmosphere takes a surprising turn when the room is suddenly filled with snow.

The contrast between pleasant and unpleasant surroundings and the allusion to Estonians' widespread desire to be "somewhere else" is also characteristic of Ristikivi's novel Night of Souls. The tropical environment and the snowfall represent two different worlds that unexpectedly come together in one space. "Snowy Tropics seeks to make the viewer think about climate change, the contradictions of nature or the clash of cultures, while offering aesthetic pleasure and emotional recognition.

The installation encourages viewers to question the narratives that influence their surroundings and to explore space and environment from new perspectives. By dislocating space and adding unexpected elements, the installation helps to open up a dialogue on themes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The installation "Snowy Tropics" is a Viljandi Culture Academy's student work, which was first shown at the "Viljandi tuled?" light festival, February 2024.

The Inescapable Strain of Endless Lonely Dreamlike Wandering

The installation “The Inescapable Strain of Endless Lonely Dreamlike Wandering” is inspired by the dreamlike atmosphere and solitary wandering through the seemingly endless corridors and rooms of the house in Karl Ristikivi's novel "Night of Souls." The most inspiring locations from the book were the theater hall, the gallery with a single painting and the death vigil in the great hall. The main character of the novel has got into that house by accident. Similarly, the main character of my work seems to be lost there, an uninvited guest. The connection with the dreaminess of Ristikivi's novel is manifested in the fact that the beginning of my creative process was also wandering and it was just in a dream that I saw this theater hall arranged in a box.

twin of myself

Square as the beginning, middle and end of everything.

The idea of the installation "Cube" arose from Ruben Östlund's film "The Square" (2017), which talks about the square as follows: "In the square, we share equal rights and responsibilities with everyone. The idea behind the square is that if you step inside it, you obey a shared social contract that is ignored elsewhere.”

Anxiety

Do you have a clean conscience? What is your sin? WE can already see right through you.

Our installation "Anxiety" was inspired by the feeling of anxiety and conviction. We wish to convey the hopelessness and fear of being a part of an inescapable conspiracy and judged by a divine being.

Am i doomed?

Installation "Am I Doomed?" is inspired by the music of Moses Sumney, which expresses rawness, vulnerability and emotional depth.

The video installation attempts to capture the symbiosis between music and visual art. The main aim is to create a pure and simple space where music, light and movement come together in the most authentic way.

As a visitor, you can experience the same space from different angles, giving you the opportunity to be part of the work.
