The theme of Tivoli is nostalgia — a feeling simultaneously deeply personal and universally understood. Nostalgic longing is shaped by each person's lived experiences, yet it is equally a collective social construct. This makes nostalgia a sword with more than two edges. It can heal the soul, but it can also poison it. When used in moderation, it can provide insights into oneself. When taken to excess, however, it cuts one off from the world. No matter how comforting it may be to wrap oneself in it, nostalgia is not much of a substitute for reality.
