For SAAL Biennaal 2021, rile* books installs a reading room/bookshop gathering together artist publications, writings from choreographers and performers, as well as a selection of intersectional feminist poetry, theory and fiction. rile* is committed to hosting experimental publishing practices, and inviting readers to experiment with their own reading practices, expanding reading from a solitary act and questioning the different materials across which reading can and does happen.

During the opening hours of the reading room/bookshop, rile* will screen a newly commissioned film “Xenotopia” by Quanta Qualia. In “Xenotopia”, Quanta Qualia stages their fascination for the weird and wondrous. They read and weave together fragments from theory, fiction and poetry. All of which explore that which lies beyond common perception, cognition and experience, like Clarice Lispector's chasing of the formless or Henri Michaux's writing on mescaline. The set they created for the occasion serves as the shiny crack by which enter these ungrounding perceptions of the strange Outside.

rile* is an artist-run bookshop and project space for performance and publication. rile* is into poetry, theory, choreography, artist writing and various other text based experiments. rile* organizes performances, meetings, launches, readings... Their aim is to create a renewed agency to publishing as a medium for artistic practice. They aim to provide access to diverse writing and publication practices, as well as critical and creative approaches to publishing from independent presses, self-published work and more established artistic and literary projects. They question traditional understandings of publishing and open a space for alternative approaches to publishing, in both its material sense and its content. rile* is the base word for silence in Láadan, a feminist constructed language developed by Suzette Haden Elgin in 1982. The language was included in her science fiction “Native Tongue” series. Láadan contains a number of words that are used to make unambiguous statements that include how one feels about what one is saying. According to Elgin, this is designed to counter language's limitations to those who are forced to respond: I know I said that, but I meant this. rile* is hosted by Chloe Chignell (choreographer, dancer and writer) and Sven Dehens (artist, writer and curator) and is based in Brussels.
